The BBC has published an analysis that notes "nagging doubt" to be the theme of Davos 2011. It's well deserved doubt. Most people start off by expressing doubt about the Euro Zone, I firmly believe the Euro Zone has turned the corner. If troubled spots like Greece continue troubling, the severity will decrease with each passing month. The European turnaround would likely be one of the big stories...

2010 was the hottest year on record. 2010 has also so far had extremely cold winter, in some places. You could explain 2010 being the hottest year off as Global Warming. How to explain the cold winters? So far, two explanations worth considering have emerged. One blames Arctic ice melt . The other blames increasing seasonal snow cover in Siberia. There is considerable literature arguing that it's...

On December 16, European member States defeated a bid to allocate sufficient funds to the ITER Nuclear Fusion project based in France. The costs of this project have ballooned, and money from unspent 2010 subsidies was to be set aside to cover the resulting deficit over 2012-2013. The deficit was considerable - Euro 1.4 Trillion. Now, a meager Euro 330 Million might be used to cover this deficit....

Richard Holbrooke, Obama's Special Envoy to AfPak, has passed away of natural causes during the course of last night. The Huffington Post has reported a few minutes back that his last words, addressed to his Pakistani surgeon, were "you've got to stop this war in Afghanistan." There are slim chances of Pakistan stopping the Afghanistan war. Further, any talk of stopping the war, from any ambitiou...

The talks at Cancun have entered their final few hours . No resolution in sight. There is no hope of avoiding Climate Change, no master what those in power tell us. It has long been inevitable. There is however, a hope that we would adapt to Climate Change, with minimal damage. There is an operational strategy at play here. This post however, is about the political equations that lie behind opera...

The Global Carbon Project, a team set up to track emissions of CO2 since 2001, has reported that Carbon emissions fell in 2009. It is my opinion, formed after some study, that these numbers are false. They are false because they do not report emissions out of China correctly. During the recession, the West has slowed down, China has slowed barely, recovered and then, sped up. Its speed however, h...

Obama has written an Op-Ed article in the International Herald Tribune. The article relates to the meeting between America and NATO, currently on at Lisbon, where the fate of the Afghan conflict will be discussed, and some timeline will likely be put in place. A number of outlets have quoted Obama's article, noting that it points to a long term engagement, beyond 2014, with Afghanistan. I'd like...

One of the themes we visit often on The Ripple Blog is energy. Climate Change is another. My best understanding so far was that our redemption lay in Thorium based nuclear energy . Now, I'd like to offer a more specific proposal, one which has a fairly high probability of panning out. Things have gotten so bad, you can predict what would work and what would not, simply by analyzing what the Torie...

John Abraham of St. Thomas University, Minnesota, is pulling together a "Climate Rapid Action Team", which would strike at the roots of Climate Change skepticism . This team is intended to attend Conservative talk shows and television shows - directly confronting Conservative politicians and media figures. The intention is noble, one wishes the team well. Here's thing though, Climate Change skept...

The annual Human Development Report from the United Nations came out yesterday. Several newspapers have covered this report from differing perspectives. The Telegraph, on November 4, published an writeup on the reports conclusion that 'Climate Chance is a major threat to human development.' We should be so lucky. We should be so lucky if known, predictable catastrophes like Climate Change and ove...
